Discover Every Corner of Norway

Modalen is Vestland’s fjord-cradled hideaway - a municipality where waterfalls tumble into narrow inlets, mountain hikes lead to castle-like cliffs, and fjord cruises glide past sheer rock walls. With around 400 residents and a landscape shaped by Mofjorden, Mostraumen, and the Stølsheimen highlands, Modalen is the kind of place where you can kayak through glacial streams, hike to “The Castle,” and still catch a reindeer kebab beside a sandy beach. It’s got serenity, spectacle, and a name that simply means “the valley of Mo.”

Getting There

Modalen lies northeast of Bergen, accessible via E39 and E16 highways. The fjord cruise from Bergen to Mo via Mostraumen is a popular scenic route. Buses require transfers at Knarvik and Ostereidet. The area is best explored by boots, boat, or bold curiosity - especially if you’re chasing cliff echoes, fjord reflections, or the hush of birch leaves beside a poet’s birthplace.
