Modum is Viken’s cobalt-colored valley - a municipality where ski jumpers soar from world-record hills, cobalt mines sparkle with industrial history, and painters once chased trolls through misty forests. With around 12,600 residents and a landscape shaped by the Drammenselva river, Tyrifjorden lake, and the villages of Vikersund, Geithus, and Åmot, Modum is the kind of place where you can climb 1,078 steps to a ski-flying arena, raft past waterfalls, and still catch a reindeer kebab beside a cobalt-blue museum. It’s got altitude, artistry, and a name that may stem from Old Norse Móðheimr - “home by the calm river.”

Where to Stay in Modum
Getting There
Modum lies in eastern Norway, with Vikersund as its administrative center. The RV35 and RV287 highways connect to Drammen and Hønefoss, and the Randsfjord railway line runs through Åmot and Vikersund. Buses serve Geithus, Snarum, and Simostranda. The area is best explored by boots, bike, or train - especially if you’re chasing cobalt echoes, ski-flying thrills, or the hush of birch leaves beside a painter’s muse.
