Røst

Røst is Nordland’s puffin-peppered island basin — a municipality where seabirds outnumber humans, cod dries on wooden racks, and a golden ring crowns the coat of arms. With around 460 residents and a landscape shaped by the Røstlandet island, Skomvær lighthouse, and the archipelago’s 365 skerries, Røst is the kind of place where you can hike past Venetian legends, explore bird cliffs, and still catch a fish soup beside a Querini opera. It’s got solitude, seabirds, and a name that may stem from Old Norse *rǫst* — “maelstrom.”
