Meløy

Meløy is Nordland’s glacier-framed archipelago — a municipality where 755 islands shimmer beside alpine fjords, WWII bunkers overlook the midnight sun, and poppies bloom near the ice fields of Svartisen. With around 6,200 residents and a landscape shaped by Holandsfjorden, Glomfjord, and the Svartisen glacier, Meløy is the kind of place where you can kayak past sea eagles, hike to glacier tongues, and still catch a reindeer kebab beside a lighthouse. It’s got contrasts, calm waters, and a name that may stem from Old Norse Mjǫlva — “flour island,” referring to fine beach sand.

Getting There

Meløy lies on the Helgeland coast, with Ørnes as its administrative center. The E6 and FV17 highways connect via ferry from Ågskardet to Forøy. Hurtigruten stops daily at Ørnes, and express boats serve Bolga, Støtt, and Meløya. Buses run to Glomfjord, Reipå, and Halsa. The area is best explored by boots, boat, or bold curiosity — especially if you’re chasing glacier echoes, poppy lore, or the hush of birch leaves beside a midnight fjord.
