Ibestad is Troms’ twin-island escape - a municipality where tunnels dive beneath fjords, mountains rise like Viking shields, and cloudberries grow in gardens that aren’t technically gardens. With around 1,300 residents and a landscape shaped by Rolla and Andørja islands, Ibestad is the kind of place where you can hike to Langlitinden (Northern Europe’s tallest island peak), fish for halibut in midnight sun, and still catch a black-and-white Tarzan film in a community cinema. It’s got altitude, archipelago charm, and a name that once meant “Ívar’s homestead.”

Where to Stay in Ibestad
Getting There
Ibestad lies in South Troms, with Hamnvik as its administrative center. The Ibestad Tunnel connects Rolla and Andørja, and the Mjøsund Bridge links Andørja to the mainland. Ferries run from Sørrollnes to Harstad, and buses connect to Salangen and Gratangen. The area is best explored by car, boots, or binoculars - especially if you’re chasing reindeer, rock festivals, or the hush of birch forests in the midnight light.
