Hyllestad is Vestland’s stone-carved storyteller - a municipality where Viking millstones still rest in ancient quarries, fjords stretch like polished mirrors, and the mountain Lihesten looms like a myth waiting to be climbed. With around 1,300 residents and a landscape shaped by geology, folklore, and fjord mist, Hyllestad is the kind of place where you can hike to a cave called Gygrekjeften, bake flatbread over a fire, and still catch a cultural walk led by someone who remembers the war. It’s got grit, granite, and a name that once meant “quiet abode.”

Getting There
Hyllestad sits on the northern shore of the Sognefjord, with Leirvik as its largest village. The Fv57 highway connects to Dale and Lavik, and express boats run from Bergen to nearby Askvoll. The area is best explored by car, bike, or boots - especially if you’re chasing stone trails, fjord silence, or the echo of Viking hammers in the hills.
