Skaun

Skaun is Trøndelag’s fjord-fringed heritage basin — a municipality where Viking legends echo through stone monuments, pilgrims tread ancient paths, and four standing stones crown the coat of arms. With around 8,500 residents and a landscape shaped by the Laugen lake, Orkdalen valley, and the villages of Børsa, Buvika, and Viggja, Skaun is the kind of place where you can hike past medieval ruins, fish in glacier-fed waters, and still catch a cinnamon bun beside a 12th-century church. It’s got myth, mist, and a name that may stem from *skinr* — “to shine,” a nod to the shimmering lake Laugen.

The area is best explored by boots, boat, or bold curiosity — especially if you’re chasing stone echoes, pilgrim lore, or the hush of birch leaves beside a Viking ruin.
