Vinje is Telemark’s poetry-penned mountain basin - a municipality where folk tunes echo through valleys, stave churches guard glacier-fed lakes, and a silver billy goat leaps across the coat of arms. With around 3,800 residents and a landscape shaped by the Hardangervidda plateau, Møsvatn Lake, and the villages of Åmot, Rauland, Haukeli, Øyfjell, and Arabygdi, Vinje is the kind of place where you can hike past scree fields, explore rosemaling galleries, and still sip juniper cordial beside a museum built from stone and verse. It’s got fjells, fiddles, and a name that means “meadow.”

Where to Stay in Vinje
Getting There
Vinje lies along the E134 highway between Oslo and Haugesund, with Åmot as its administrative center and Rauland as its cultural heart. Reach it by car, bus, or boat across Møsvatn. The area is best explored by boots, bike, or bold curiosity - especially if you’re chasing goat echoes, poetic lore, or the hush of pine needles beside a gallery carved from mountain stone.
