Discover Every Corner of Norway

Saltdal is Nordland’s rowan-framed valley basin - a municipality where WWII history echoes through blood-stained roads, national parks stretch across glacier-carved wilderness, and a golden twig crowns the coat of arms. With around 4,900 residents and a landscape shaped by the Saltdalselva River, Saltfjellet mountains, and the villages of Rognan, Storjord, and Røkland, Saltdal is the kind of place where you can hike past war memorials, sip whisky at 67° North, and still catch a bite of møsbrømlefse beside a national park gallery. It’s got heritage, heart, and a name that means “valley of the strong stream.”

Getting There

Saltdal lies just south of the Arctic Circle, with Rognan as its administrative center. The E6 highway and Nordland railway line run through town, and buses connect to Bodø, Fauske, and Mo i Rana. The area is best explored by boots, bike, or bold curiosity - especially if you’re chasing rowan echoes, war lore, or the hush of birch leaves beside a whisky barrel.
