Fjaler

Fjaler is Sunnfjord’s low-key showoff — a municipality in Vestland where poets, post roads, and fjord views all quietly compete for your attention. With around 2,900 residents and a coastline that hugs the Dalsfjord like it’s got secrets to keep, Fjaler is the kind of place where you can hike to a waterfall, quote Jakob Sande, and still make it back for cheese and jazz at a farm café. It’s got history, scenery, and just enough eccentricity to keep things interesting.

Getting There

Fjaler’s main village, Dale, sits on the south side of the Dalsfjord. Ferries run to Eikenes, and buses connect to Førde, Hyllestad, and Rysjedalsvika. Førde Airport is 28 km east. The area’s best explored by car, bike, or curiosity — especially if you’re chasing waterfalls, stone crosses, or post-road bridges.
